Cape Cod Center for Public Safety Training Announces ‘Train-the-Trainer Course’ for Cape Cod Fire Fighters
May 11, 2021 (Barnstable, MA) – Barnstable County’s Cape Cod Center for Public Safety Training (CCCPST) would like to announce the Fire Ground Survival (FGS) Train-the-Trainer Class, a 4-day course taught by instructors with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), to be held at Joint Base Cape Cod May 10th – 14th.
IAFF member firefighters from Cape Cod fire departments, alongside instructors from Barnstable County, will partake in the program. A trailer has been provided to Barnstable County equipped with training props that can be deployed to Cape Cod fire departments for future classes and refreshers.
The purpose of the IAFF Fire Ground Survival program is to ensure that training for Mayday prevention and Mayday operations are consistent between all fire fighters, company officers and chief officers. Fire fighters must be trained to perform potentially life-saving actions if they become lost, disoriented, injured, low on air or trapped.
The course will be taught by IAFF Fire Ground Survival Master Instructors using small group learning methods. They will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. on most days if all of the learning objectives for that day are covered. Students will spend part of the time in a classroom setting and the rest of the time performing practical self-survival skills while wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE), including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

The 4-day course, being held at Joint Base Cape Cod Fire Department, will take place on Monday, May 10th through Thursday May 13th from 8:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m.

- Preventing the Mayday
- Being Ready for the Mayday
- Self-Survival Procedures
- Self-Survival Skills
- Managing a Mayday
The Train-the-Trainer course at Joint Base Cape Cod is made possible by a grant awarded to the Hyannis Fire Department from Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG), a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) program. These fire safety grants fund critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel, enhance efficiencies and support community resilience. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
