Assembly of Delegates Launches 17th Session with New Leadership

BARNSTABLE COUNTY, MA | January 11, 2021 – The 17th Session of the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates held its first meeting of the new Session on Jan. 6, 2021. In its first actions, the Assembly elected Barnstable Delegate Patrick Princi as Speaker and Brewster Delegate Mary Chaffee as Deputy Speaker.

Speaker Princi has served in the Assembly since 2012. He is a probation officer, has led projects to address homelessness, was a legislative aide on Beacon Hill and a commercial shell fisherman. He has served the town of Barnstable on the Community Preservation Committee, Economic Development Commission and Barnstable Charter Commission. Speaker Princi received the Cape Cod American Red Cross “Hero Award for Community Service.” He is a graduate of Barnstable High School, Saint Michael’s College, and holds a Master of Public Administration degree.

Deputy Speaker Chaffee has served in the Assembly since 2017, is the Chair of Brewster’s Select Board, and served seven years on the Town’s Board of Health. She served as a Navy nurse for 26 years, where she was promoted to the rank of Captain. She is the author of dozens of publications, was a policy analyst attached to the Pentagon, and interned in the office of U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye. Deputy Speaker Chaffee completed two bachelor’s degrees at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received a PhD from the University of Maryland Baltimore. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Massachusetts School of Law Dartmouth, and was recognized with a Burton Award, a national award for legal writing.

The Assembly of Delegates is the legislative arm of Cape Cod regional government. It was established through the Barnstable County Charter passed by the State Legislature in 1988. Each of Cape Cod’s 15 towns elect an Assembly Delegate every two years. The Board of Regional Commissioners, and County Administrator who leads daily County government activities, form the executive branch of Barnstable County government.
