Seeking MASSTC Project Intern | Spring 2020

The Department of Health and Environment is seeking an Intern for the spring semester, 2020 for its subdivision, the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center.  Applications are due by November 30, 2019.

The Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC) is looking for a highly motivated intern to join our team as we work to tackle water pollution related to onsite septic systems on Cape Cod and beyond. As the nation’s premier onsite septic system research, development, and testing facility, MASSTC has served a critical role in the advancement of technologies which can reduce the impact of wastewater on the environment by contaminants such as nutrients, pathogens, pharmaceuticals, and Contaminants of Emerging Concern.

This internship offers a tremendous opportunity to get hands-on experience with a wide variety of Innovative/Alternative (I/A) onsite wastewater treatment technologies. The Intern will directly participate in sampling, recording and analyzing data, writing reports, and maintaining associated equipment. There will also be an opportunity to participate in research study design and construction, septic system design, review, and installation, and maintenance of I/A onsite septic systems.

Hours: Flexible

Required skills:

  • Knowledge the principles of wastewater treatment and the impacts of wastewater on the environment;
  • Familiarity with basic environmental sampling techniques and analyses;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;

Education level: Open to all students enrolled at an accredited college or university in an Environmental Science or another related physical science program.

What can you expect to gain from this internship? The successful Intern will take away a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of onsite wastewater treatment and the impacts of wastewater on the environment. They will learn and further develop their skill set of proper techniques for taking environmental samples and gain hands-on experience with standard field monitoring technology.
