Announcing the Cape Cod Municipal Police Academy
Police Chiefs across the Cape Cod and the Islands will no longer need to send recruits off-Cape to obtain academy seats, a practice that delays training opportunities and places a tremendous financial burden on the respective departments.
On Wednesday, February 20, 2019, the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee voted unanimously to approve the creation of a police training academy on Cape Cod. In a unique partnership with municipal, county, state and federal entities, this undertaking will meet our regional needs by providing an all-inclusive venue at substantial savings for 21 Cape & Islands towns. The municipal recruit fee is $3,300. Seats will also be offered to off-Cape municipalities. Barnstable County will provide initial advance funding, fiduciary administration and oversight.
A maximum of 45 recruits will comprise the first class scheduled to begin on Monday, July 8, 2019, at the new training site at Joint Base Cape Cod. The deadline to apply is May, 24, 2019.
Training will utilize and comply with all MPTC Standards and will use MPTC Certified Instructors. The facility will include overnight accommodations, a running track, gymnasium, swimming pool access, a firing range, EVOC track, vacant buildings for applied patrol procedures, a medical facility, auditorium for graduation, and on-site lunch facilities.
Peter Carnes, retired Yarmouth police chief and former chief of police and director of campus safety at Stonehill College will serve as Director of the Academy, and Wayne Sampson, retired Shrewsbury police chief and former executive director of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association will serve as Assistant Director.
