County Commissioner Honored for Leadership, Service

BARNSTABLE — With praise for “her dedication, leadership and service to the Cape Cod community,” the Mercy Otis Warren Cape Cod Woman of the Year Committee presented a special award of distinction to county commissioner Mary Pat Flynn Feb. 6, 2019.

The citation highlighted Flynn’s civic engagement as reminiscent of Cape-born Revolutionary-era writer and activist Mercy Otis Warren. During Flynn’s ownership of the Village Pantry in Falmouth, the venue “became a community gathering place where local issues filled the room. Like Mercy, many political careers were launched through Mary Pat’s counsel and advice.”

These conversations “led to her own political activism,” the citation stated, “and a career of public service including becoming one of Falmouth’s most popular selectwomen for two decades. She then expanded her political impact by serving as Barnstable County Commissioner for more than ten years.”

Flynn has been a strong supporter of the committee, which for the last 17 years has honored a Cape Cod woman who exemplifies the qualities of Mercy Otis Warren. Nomination forms for this year’s award, which will be presented June 5 at Tales of Cape Cod in Barnstable Village, will be available at community locations soon and on-line at http://bit.ly/MOW_Nomination

Also, the committee is sponsoring its second Mercy Otis Warren Freedom of Expression Award, an essay contest for all Cape Cod girls and boys in the fifth grade.
