WHEN: Wednesday, October 3, 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM | RSVP-Free
WHERE: Barnstable Senior Center, Hyannis

Presenter: Kalliope Chute, Hazardous Materials Environmental Specialist at Barnstable County. No fuss, no fees – Barnstable County is working for you.

Recently there was a large spill of liquid, or elemental, mercury on Cape Cod that will be both costly to the environment and to the homeowner. Despite being phased out of many products, mercury can be found in many household items such as thermostats, thermometers, blood pressure and other medical devices, nautical antiques and clocks, games and more.

To assist residents of Barnstable County in disposing of this highly toxic element, the Barnstable County Hazardous Materials Program offers free pickup of liquid mercury. Barnstable County has collected literally over a ton of mercury in the past 15 years, through the cooperation of all 15 Cape Cod towns, the Barnstable County Hazardous Materials Program, and Covanta-SEMASS.
