Cape Cod Smart Transportation Week
June 24 – 30, 2018
BARNSTABLE COUNTY, MA —The Cape Cod Commission (CCC) and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) and our transportation partners in the region will be promoting smart transportation options on Cape Cod during the week of June 24-30. Throughout the week, a series of activities will promote the use of transportation modes which reduce traffic impacts caused by single-occupant vehicles throughout the Cape. From our world-class bike trails to the Steamship Authority and Hy-Line ferry services, Cape Cod has transportation choices to get you where you need to go – reducing congestion and helping us all breathe a little easier.

Cape Cod Smart Transportation Week is an annual event designated as the last week in June by the Barnstable County Commissioners. Transportation week supports ongoing work by the CCC and the CCRTA to plan for and assist in implementing improvements to the region’s transportation infrastructure and services. Creative commuters can log in their “smart” trips (e.g., carpooling, transit, bike, walking, etc.) into BayStateCommute (www.baystatecommute.com), a service of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in order to support commuting options. One randomly-selected Barnstable County resident will win a $50 gift card from Smithfield Markets (Barnstable & Peterson’s markets).

Cape Cod Smart Transportation Week 2018 will feature several events and activities, including:

Monday, June 25, 2018 – Bus Transportation Day
Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, Peter Pan Bus Company, Plymouth & Brockton and other bus operators provide Cape Cod residents and visitors with mobility options around the Cape and beyond.
Tweet a photo of your smart commute with the hashtag #capecodsmart and be entered into a drawing to win a free CCRTA 31-Day fixed route pass.

Tuesday, June 26, 2018 – Ferry Day and Aviation Day
On this day, Smart Transportation Week will focus on the important role that water transportation plays in linking the Cape to Boston and the Islands. The Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Ferry are partners in providing a robust multi-modal network for Cape residents and visitors.

This summer, Hy-Line is offering an evening special to the Vineyard from Hyannis, for only $25 round trip! A few hours are just enough time to give you a little taste of Martha’s Vineyard. Leave Hyannis on the ferry at four-fifty, arriving in downtown Oak Bluffs in one hour, and depart Oak Bluffs that same night. Some restrictions apply. Visit us online at hylinecruises.com for details.

Also on this day, Smart Transportation Week will focus on Barnstable Municipal Airport and the important role that the airport plays as a regional aviation transportation hub both on and off the Cape as well as the Islands. The CCRTA now has a regular stop at the Barnstable Municipal Airport on the Sealine.

Wednesday, June 27, 2018 – Commuter Rally
The Cape Cod Commission, the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, MassRides (a non-profit agency providing commuter assistance), and MassBike (a bicycling advocacy organization) will sponsor a Commuter Rally from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Barnstable County complex (behind the Cape Cod Commission building) off Route 6A in Barnstable village. The rally will also feature a free 10-minute “Beach Viewer” CCRTA bus ride that will depart at 12:30 P.M. from the county parking lot, travel to Millway Beach in Barnstable and return to the County lot. Information and giveaways will be provided. Participants who bring their bikes will receive a free bike safety equipment (lights, reflectors, etc. – courtesy of Barnstable County Bike Safety Initiative and MassRides).

Thursday, June 28, 2018 – Bike and Ped Day
Join the Friends of the Bourne Rail Trail for a scenic, morning bike ride along the Cape Cod Canal. The Friends will provide an overview of the plans to connect the Shining Sea Bikeway in Falmouth with the Cape Cod Canal in Bourne and Sandwich. The ride will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Bourne Recreation Area (underneath the Bourne Bridge off of Sandwich Road). We will stop for coffee and a muffin at the Train Bridge before returning to the Bourne Recreation Center around 9:30 a.m.

Friday, June 29, 2019 – Cape Flyer Day
The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority culminates the Smart Transportation week with a raffle for two CapeFLYER round-trip (Boston-Hyannis) train tickets. Check out the CapeFlyer facebook page for details to win.
