Community Meeting on Housing Court Expansion

On July 17, 2017, Governor Baker signed legislation for a statewide expansion of the housing court with $750,000 to begin the expansion. Two million people in 84 cities and towns in Barnstable, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Dukes, and Nantucket counties will now have access to a housing court.

Discussion on the next steps for the housing court expansion will take place at community meetings throughout the State. Massachusetts Law Reform, with local partners, has set up a series of meetings over the next two months. The local host for this discussion is the Cape & Islands Regional Network on Homelessness. All are welcome. The purpose of these meetings will be to:
•Understand the expansion.
•Hear from Housing Court Chief Justice Sullivan about what is in progress and plans for the upcoming year.
•Have time to ask questions and provide thoughts about expansion.
•Talk about companion expansions for the Tenancy Preservation, Lawyer for the Day programs, and other resources special to the Housing Court.
