Barnstable County Fire Academy Graduation
Saturday May 20, 2017 – 21 men and women representing 6 fire departments across Cape Cod graduated from the Barnstable County Fire Academy. These dedicated individuals completed more than 200 hours of training at the academy which culminated in receiving their Firefighter I/II certificates.
The Event
Opening remarks were given by Fire Academy Director and retired Sandwich Fire Chief, George Rusell. State Representative David T. Viera, member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives of the Third Barnstable District, served as guest speaker. Special Awards were presented by Captain Chris Beal, Class Spokesperson Rebecca Tazel shared her remarks, and closing remarks were delivered by Director Russell and Retired Marshal Stephen Coan.
Director Russell presented graduation certificates to 21 graduates: Benjamin Bartolini (Wellfleet), Angelina Basile (Bourne), Louis Carlo (Brewster), Ricardo DeLeon (Bourne), Matthew DeLeon (Bourne), Sam Dunford (Dennis), Drew Giroud (Bourne), Darrah Greene (Yarmouth), Seth Karter (Brewster Fire), John Kelly (Bourne), Brendan MacDonald (West Barnstable), Griffin Moriarty (Bourne), Cameron Mosher (Dennis), Brian O’Connell (Bourne), Andrew Ottino (Brewster), Owen Palmatier (Bourne), Ivaylo Pavlov (West Barnstable), Daniel Poucher (Bourne), James Sandino (Brewster), Caleb Savard (Bourne), and Rebecca Tatzel (West Barnstable).
Firefighter I/II Program
Today’s firefighters do far more than fight fires. This comprehensive program trains recruits in the areas of Basic Fire Suppression, SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus), Search and Rescue, Vehicle Extrication, Ladders, and Hazardous Materials, as well as several other subjects to assist them in their training to become a firefighter. Recruits learn all these skills and more from certified fire instructors who are also experienced firefighters.
